Since the year 2000 the singles scene has grown like never before.
Largely due to ongoing demand, assisted by technology and the
internet.
In recent history we have seen in Australia -
o Soulmates Technology (the owners of former online dating site
called Soulmates World) was sold to Match.com in the US for USD $23
M in April 2002 (back when the conversion was at AUD 0.52 Cents.
Which meant the sale was actually around AUD $44 M)
o RSVP was sold to Fairfax Digital in July 2005 for $38 Million
o One of the Australia's largest Speed Dating firms is currently
doing a turn over of $2 M a year.
o The Singles Dinner for Six market isn’t far behind with some
operators earning well over $5K a week.
o In Sydney there are a few people holding weekly Dance Parties with
revenues in excess of $10K per week.
So why is it growing? ... and what makes it a good area for anyone
who wants to work from home?
The singles demographic is skewed into two basic groups;
1. The younger set who are between 24 to 39 years age. This group is
already net savvy and wants things simple. More often they are never
married and could be searching for a longer term partner.
2. The mature age group, typically from 35 to 59 years age group.
They can be professionals, may have married once before and want
events that are suited to conversation and general networking.
Over the last 30 years being single have become more of a lifestyle
choice rather than something to be shunned and avoided at all costs.
So, are Traditional Dating Agencies still popular?
In some circles they still are, and always will be. Mostly to the mature market and some
are still doing handsome turnover revenues. A typical traditional
dating agency will make revenues around $1 to $2 Million per year.
Not bad for a business ran out of a small office. In a way, meeting
face to face will always beat online for a percentage of the
population who want certainty with dating.
A typical part timer in the industry can yield up to $1,000 a week
doing relatively small events on an ongoing basis. Even Bridget
Jones would be happy with that. Most of this can happen within a
short time, unlike other industries where the lead times for making
a profit are much longer.
Why I like the singles industry is that it’s an "evergreen market".
More singles are coming available after a long term break up on a
steady basis during the year, every year. Plus a lot of singles
simply want uncomplicated events and company with like minded
people.
In Australia there is about 7 million singles, a large number of
them are in full time jobs and have a ready cash spend to give to
organizers who place regular singles events.
Is it recession proof?
Yes, it is. I entered the singles scene holding social events when
the last recession hit during 1991. Then the same as now, a
recession had no effect on the numbers events holders were
achieving. In fact they were burgeoning in numbers at the time. So I
hardly expect any recession will affect the people who hold singles
events this time around.
Likewise there are some elements of the singles world that will
always be in demand such as counselling services, online dating,
weekend’s away tours and so forth.
More recently there has been a growth in dating coaches around the
globe. As singles desire to learn dating and relating techniques -
they want to learn from a person how they can create their own luck
meeting a partner rather than merely going to a dating agency and
staring at their mobile phone waiting for a call.
What are the main points about the industry you could use?
• Its a stable industry with steady growth prospects
• Unlike most other businesses, your only main overhead is going to
be advertising and marketing
• It can work as the ideal work from home business
• Its terrifically suited to the internet marketing and can be
technology enhanced
• If you are a people person, then you can use this business to help
your prospects for meeting people
• If you run another business that requires you to meet people -
such as beauty, financial planning, weight loss (etc) then this
business will help you meet more people
• The income is always going to remain steady and will grow as you
grow your business
